When feedlot records are reviewed to see what animals are performing,

performance between animals in every consignment. The second is that there
is a large difference in the average performance of vendors. What are

WHY IS STRUCTURE IMPORTANT?
The average price of an Angus bull in 2002 was $ 4413. The salvage value
of a bull is around $1000. Your bull will depreciate around $3500 over
a lifetime. Unless he sires a lot of high quality calves he’s a
bad investment. Just getting a third year at full service from a $5000
bull will reduce the cost per calf by $10. Selecting a bull that is structurally
sound will increase the likelihood that the bull’s cost is spread
out over a large number of calves.

of the cost structure of beef production. Cattle that convert feed to
meat more efficiently is probably something that you’d particularly
like on your farm now.
This article discusses increasing the feed efficiency of your herd through
use of both genetics and management.
