Investing back into the industry for its continued betterment, Gilmandyke Pastoral have generously pledged a heifer at sale to the Angus Foundation, raising funds to assist in providing professional development opportunities for young beef breeders, and to assist in conducting research, development and educational programs for the benefit of Angus breeders and the wider Australian beef industry.
The Bateman Family and the team at Gilmandyke Pastoral will be auctioning Lot 121 Gilmandyke Eva U342PV at their sale, which will take place on property on the 22nd of Aug 2024 at 1.00pm AEST. The heifer is out of Gilmandyke Eva N206 Sv and sired by Baldridge Versatile Pv.
“U342PV is a yearling heifer, and she’s the first heifer to sell in our registered heifer draft,” said Gilmandyke Angus Stud Manager Pete McNamara.
“She’s a young heifer that I’ve selected out of our spring-born U-drop and she’s one that I actually wanted to keep for myself. She was in our pick pen, and she goes right back to a Narrangullan Eva cow family that were some of our initial cows we purchased here at Gilmandyke when we first started the stud.
“She’s an exceptional young heifer, very structurally sound. The cow family has been a continual performer for us here, and we’re very proud of her and hope she can do a nice job for somewhere else.”
The donation was born from Gilmandyke’s interest in developing not only the people within their business, but the wider Angus breed to ensure the future of the beef industry.
“Here at Gilmandyke, we think youth development is really important, not only within our program, but the greater Angus Society,” said General Manager Wade Peatman. “This was just a really nice way that we could play our part in letting the young people come through in the industry.”
“The youth development programs at Angus Australia are just incredible,” continued Pete. “I don’t think there’s any other program that supports and fosters youth coming through, particularly in the Angus Family, and they’ve played a special role in my development throughout my time.”
Pete himself was a recipient of an opportunity provided by the Angus Foundation in recent years, having been a participant in the 2022 cohort of the GenAngus Future Leaders Program.
“Angus programs have been a huge part of my development right from a young age,” he said.
“I think not only the networking, but the support that you receive from those programs and the people that you meet within them, I’ve harnessed those relationships, and they’ve really helped me to grow.
“They’re big supporters of mine within the industry and some of which are mentors now. It’s been really incredible, and I’m very grateful for it.”
Speaking about his experience in the GenAngus program and how it has impacted his personal and professional development, Pete said, “GenAngus was a great program to be a part of, and I was lucky enough to be involved in the following year as an alumni.
“The networking with my peers doing GenAngus created some really good friendships and I have been able to bounce ideas and talk with those peers for the last two years.
“They’ve developed into some of my better friendships within the industry, and it’s always good to have those relationships there. I think being part of the alumni, it helps you. Everyone just wants to help. You can ask a question and be supported by multiple years of GenAngus alumni.
“It’s really good to be able to have that network of people there behind you, supporting you. Then along with the speakers and other people involved with the GenAngus program, they’ve developed into good industry relations, and I have been able to touch on them for support.” READ MORE ABOUT PETE”S GENANGUS JOURNEY HERE
The team at Gilmandyke hopes that their contribution of the proceeds of the heifer will see the continuation of the Angus Foundation and it’s work in providing a range of opportunities for young people who come from all backgrounds, but also have a passion for the agricultural industry.
“We’d love to see future youth programs. There are some very good ones currently, and I think Angus are doing a great job of building on that and helping to foster more young people coming through the industry,” said Pete.
“I think it’s really important to continue the youth development, and in turn, that’ll continue the progression of the Angus breed. I just think it’s such an incredible team to be a part and we’d love to give back and somewhat thank Angus for the support that they’ve given to us. Overall, I think there’s a lot to gain for young people in the industry.”
Wade continued, “These programs are a good opportunity for people without direct access to the industry to get into the Angus game, particularly through Angus Youth.
“We don’t all have an Angus stud that we can be involved in, but the Angus Youth program gives the abilities for people that want to be involved to make a start.”
