Meet the Southern Cross Barbarians Team

With the Zoetis World Angus Youth Competition just around the corner, we are thrilled to Introduce the Southern Cross Barbarians Team, a diverse group of talented individuals from across the globe, united by their dedication to the cattle industry and their drive to excel in their respective fields.
The Southern Cross Barbarians Team is an eclectic mix of young professionals from varied backgrounds, each bringing unique skills and experiences to the table. This initiative is designed to foster global camaraderie and provide these young leaders with an opportunity to showcase their knowledge, skills, and passion for Angus cattle breeding on an international stage. This initiative is perfect for youth from countries that may not have enough participants to form a full team, enabling them to join a global network of like-minded peers, develop their skills, and represent their passion for agriculture and Angus cattle.
Meet the Team Members
Erik Setyo Prayoga
Erik, hailing from Lampung, Indonesia, is a graduate of Animal Science Brawijaya University in 2022. Erik’s journey includes internships as a slaughterman at Malang Slaughterhouse, gaining skills in portioning carcasses and halal slaughtering methods. Since 2023, he has been working as cattle staff at Juang Jaya Abdi Alam, selecting cattle for slaughter and ensuring their well-being by maintaining a clean environment. Erik is an avid hiker and freshwater fishing enthusiast, often enjoying the tranquillity of kayaking while fishing.
Arifika Hidayani
Arifika, a 24-year-old graduate of Animal Science from Gadjah Mada University, took on a project as a field officer and facilitator for local farmers post-graduation. With almost two years at PT Juang Jaya Abdi Alam as an Animal Health Surveillance staff member, Arifika has conducted trials to create optimal conditions for Angus cattle, focusing on maintaining bedding quality to avoid muddiness.
Sophie Halliday
Sophie Halliday, from Goulburn, NSW, has deep roots in the cattle industry through her family’s Angus breeding business, J&C Angus. Her involvement in cattle shows and the Angus Australia youth programme has been long-standing. After finishing year 12 in 2019, Sophie worked at Spring Hill Angus and later at a Cattle Station in Julia Creek, gaining extensive experience in large-scale farming. Currently, she works at Palgrove Macintyre Station in Inverell, NSW.
Matt Heywood
Matt Heywood entered the agricultural world at 15, completing a certificate in agriculture while working full-time at Torwood Farms. By 17, he had established Dernancourt Angus with his first registered Angus females. In two years, he has acquired females from leading herds and utilised AI and ET. In 2024, Matt participated in the Angus Foundation TFI Production Tour, a notable opportunity to network and learn from experts in the field.
Participation in the World Angus Youth Competition gives these individuals not only the chance to showcase their skills but also to engage in learning, networking, and experiencing diverse agricultural practises. The competition encourages innovation and leadership among young Angus enthusiasts, providing a platform to share and expand their knowledge in genetics, Animal husbandry, and sustainable practices.
